Custom Apps

Custom Apps That Fix the Thing Eating Your Week

Every small business has one: the paper system, the spreadsheet, the "we just remember it" process that works until the busiest night of the month, when it doesn't. Off-the-shelf software either doesn't fit how you actually work or wants a monthly fee for twelve features you'll never use. We build the third option — a small, custom app shaped around the way your business already runs.

We build apps that do what you want — and don't make you pay for what you don't need. Off-the-shelf software sells you a subscription to fifty features you'll never open. We build the handful that actually run your day, and leave the bloat out.

Built where the bugs matter

We don't just build these for other people. The same family behind LocalWebRank also runs The LOCAL Place, a café and ice cream parlor in Centerville that shares a roof with the MADE @ The Local pottery studio. When the café's monthly six-course Italian dinner outgrew paper tickets, we built a custom kitchen app for it — seven role-specific tablet screens, synced in real time, working even if the internet goes down. It debuted at the café's July 2026 dinner — both nights sold out, 92 covers, zero paper tickets — and we're the ones who live with every bug. That's a different kind of accountability than a portfolio screenshot.

One inventory app, two buildings

The LOCAL Place and The LOCAL Drive-Thru sit three and a half miles apart but share vendors and one small team — so their custom inventory app tracks both locations' stock in one place. Staff sign in, pick their building, and count shelves on a tablet; every count saves the moment it's typed. The order list builds itself: drop below an item's reorder point and it's added, recount above and it drops off — nobody writes up an order by hand. Orders group by vendor with each vendor's item numbers on the line, deliveries are checked off as they're unpacked, and managers set pars and reorder points themselves, no developer needed. Each employee sees only the location they work at. It was needed for the same reason as the kitchen app: two busy locations, one small crew, and no off-the-shelf tool that treats two buildings as one operation.

What we build

  • Online booking and reservations that match your real rules (not a generic calendar)
  • Order capture and kitchen screens for restaurants and food service
  • Back-office tools — job tracking, scheduling, customer follow-up — that replace the spreadsheet
  • Custom calculators and quote tools for trades and services
  • Integrations with what you already use: Stripe payments, Clover POS, Google Business Profile

How it works

1

Tell us the pain point. Fifteen-minute call. Plain English. No tech talk required.

2

We scope small. The first version does the one thing that hurts most — not fifty features.

3

You own it. Built on the same modern platform as our websites. No per-order commissions, no surprise fees.

Honest fit

Not every business needs a custom app — and we'll tell you when you don't. If a $30/month off-the-shelf tool fits your workflow, that's the right answer and the call costs you nothing. A custom build makes sense when the off-the-shelf options keep almost fitting.

Custom app projects are scoped individually after a free call, the same way our Custom website tier works. Our websites start at $2,500 and custom application work is quoted by scope — you'll have a real number before any work begins.

FAQ

What does a custom app cost for a small business?

It depends on scope. Small single-purpose tools cost a fraction of the five-and-six-figure quotes big development shops advertise. A free scoping call gives you a real number before anything is built.

Do I need a mobile app in the App Store?

Usually not. A web app works on every phone and tablet with nothing to install, and costs far less to build and maintain.

What if my internet goes down?

Depends on the app. The kitchen system we built for our own café runs on the restaurant's local network and keeps working with no internet at all.

Who owns the app?

You do. Code, data, and accounts.
